
Daugavpils is the biggest city of Latgale, the second biggest city in Latvia. It was mentioned in historic chronicles for the first time in 1275.
Now there are many architectural, historical and cultural monuments both of valuable for the state and for the region. The unique Daugavpils fortress is one of those kinds of XIX century buildings in the Baltic States which has remained without any notable changes till nowadays. The historic centre of the city is interesting for the visitors. In the city there is a place where churches of four confessions are located together. It is called the Church Hill. It is worth mentioning also the House of Unity which was erected in 1937 as a symbol of nations unity and harmony. At that times it was the biggest building erected in the times of the Republic of Latvia as well as the most modern and multifunctional building in Europe.
